Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)

ARNPRIOR, ONTARIO…
MP Cheryl Gallant, (Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke) was pleased recently to accept an invitation to read to the children at the Pineridge Children’s Nursery in Arnprior to celebrate National Child Day.

This day, on November 20th, National Child Day, countries around the world celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

National Child Day has been nationally celebrated since 1993. It commemorates the United Nations’ adoption of two documents centered on children’s rights: the United Nations Declaration of Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959, and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989.

“The Government of Canada is committed to promoting the rights of children and youth in Canada and abroad,” remarked Cheryl Gallant, MP. “In commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the UNCRC, we celebrate the success the Government of Canada’s initiatives have had in making a real difference in the lives of children and families. Through programs like our Universal Child Care Plan, the Child Fitness Tax Credit and improving access to health care for children, the Government of Canada continues to demonstrate its commitment to working as effectively and efficiently as possible to produce real results to support families.”

The Government will continue to work to advance policies and programs that support parents and children and take their best interests into account. This work will be undertaken directly as well as with partners, including the provinces and territories, civil society, Aboriginal communities and organizations, and international organizations. Knowledge gained through lessons learned, best practices, research and tools will guide the continuous improvement towards ensuring children have the best start in life, no matter if they live in Arnprior or Palmer Rapids.  Our Conservative government will continue to strengthen our efforts to ensure the well-being, healthy development, protection and participation of children and youth.

“Take time to celebrate National Child Day as if it was every day. I encourage all Canadians to visit the National Child Day Web site (www.childday.gc.ca). It contains information for children, youth, parents, caregivers and educators regarding National Child Day and suggestions on how we can celebrate the rights of our next generation and our future,” concluded Cheryl Gallant, MP.
