MP Gallant: Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Leadership on the World Stage All Canadians can be Proud of!
June 28, 2010

Huntsville and Toronto, Ontario… “Canada is at the high water mark in summit diplomacy,” stated veteran MP Cheryl Gallant, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, at the end of two highly successful international summits recently concluded with Canada as host to the world. “Canadians have every right to be proud of the leadership demonstrated by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on the world stage. I am proud to be a member of the Conservative team in Ottawa. There is a steady hand on the economy and it shows when you see other nations following our lead to bring stability and certainty to international markets”.

“Canada relies on foreign trade to bring jobs, wealth and prosperity to our citizens. My experience representing the people of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, is that running an economy is far more difficult and complicated than our coalition opponents understand or would have you believe. One just has to look at what is happening in Greece and Japan to truly appreciate how lucky we are in Canada. I could never consider living anywhere else,” observed MP Gallant.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper guided the leaders of the world's largest and most influential economies to an accord - a consensus - that impressed the leaders themselves as many felt unity was not possible at this time. The most that had originally been expected from the weekend was some kind of process toward a hoped-for understanding in Seoul, South Korea this November. Instead, an agreement was made. This is a signal achievement for Conservative Prime Minister Harper, who set targets and lobbied hard for other nations to embrace them.

The major economies have agreed to act in concert to cut their deficits in half by 2013, and then to stabilize or reduce their debts as a percentage of GDP by 2016.

“It is my privilege to recognize and congratulate the men and women in uniform who were responsible for making sure the worlds leaders were safe while they were in Canada. It is clearly evident by the actions of a few opposition hooligans that the security precautions taken by our government were justified,” said Cheryl Gallant, MP. “The utmost restraint exercised by Police in responding to the random acts of violence and destruction of private property by extremists is a tribute to Canadian values of tolerance and understanding. The only criticism I heard about the Summit was that the Police should have been more forceful in responding to violent protesters.”

“All Canadians can be proud of the high esteem our country holds in the world today,” concluded local MP Cheryl Gallant.
