MP Gallant Meets with Industry Representatives about the Future of Nuclear in Riding
July 29, 2010

Pembroke, Ontario… Cheryl Gallant, MP Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, is pleased to confirm that she recently concluded another successful meeting with industry representatives regarding the future of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. “Summer time is my busiest time, more so than when Parliament is sitting in Ottawa,” remarked Cheryl Gallant, MP. “In addition to meeting with constituents on a personal basis, the summer break gives me an opportunity to pursue the bigger issues that require thoughtful consideration.”

The Government of Canada has announced its intention to re-structure the operations of AECL. As a veteran member of the Conservative government caucus, MP Cheryl Gallant is able to play a direct role in the debate about the future of AECL.

“What has been of particular benefit to me is the hard work that was done by members of the Chalk River Employees Ad Hoc TaskforcE (CREATE) in articulating a vision of the Chalk River Laboratories from the perspective of the local people, past and current, who have the hands-on experience of working in the nuclear industry,” acknowledged MP Gallant. “As the government moves forward regarding the future of AECL, I am constantly able to refer to the CREATE report when I meet with my government colleagues on this issue.”

“Having the background with a science degree has definitely been an asset along with my 10 years experience as an MP in planning for the future of the nuclear industry in Canada,” stated MP Cheryl Gallant. “This is the second meeting in the Riding I have had with industry. One company appears ready to open a local office. Other companies are asking to meet with me to discuss local opportunities. I am very encouraged by these developments. A world nuclear renaissance is about to occur which is very exciting news for the people who currently work in this industry.”

“There are people out there who insist on making uninformed comments about AECL and the nuclear industry in Canada for short-term political gain. All this does is play into the hands of the Toronto anti-nuke crowd who love nothing more than to spread lies about the Canadian nuclear industry and the over 30,000 jobs who depend on that industry, many of whom are our friends and neighbours here in the Ottawa valley. That same group in Toronto would rather send millions of Canadian taxpayers dollars to foreign firms to build windmills, than invest in Canadian nuclear expertise and support the thousands of jobs associated with the nuclear industry in Canada. Its time to put Canada first!” concluded Cheryl Gallant, MP.
