MP Gallant announces grant for Verge magazine
October 12, 2007

PALMER RAPIDS, ON – On behalf of Canadian Heritage Minister Josée Verner, Cheryl Gallant, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP, today announced $40,000 in funding for Verge magazine.

This investment will enable the publisher to produce a special issue designed to explore new business opportunities, increase advertising revenues, and expand circulation. Canada’s magazine for people who travel with purpose, Verge takes readers around the world with people who are doing something different and making a difference doing it. This special issue will help make Verge more financially viable and support its long-term success.

“Canadian magazines have an important place in our country’s cultural landscape. They are a crucial channel for sharing our knowledge, viewpoints, and know-how,” said Minister Verner. “This is exactly what Verge magazine is doing by offering a Canadian perspective on opportunities for studying, working, and volunteering abroad.”

“The success of Verge magazine is the success of the Ottawa Valley,” said MP Gallant. “Verge is attracting adventure tourism to this area, promoting our attractions and thereby creating more employment in the hospitality and tourism industry. As the magazine grows, so too does our potential.”

“This is excellent news for Verge magazine, and we are grateful for the support that the Canadian Magazine Fund affords small publishers,” said Jeff Minthorn, Verge’s publisher and editor-in-chief. “This support will enable us to expand our current operations, reach a greater number of young Canadians, and engage them in the important aim of gaining international education and experience.”

“I am excited by the fact that Verge magazine is being produced in rural Renfrew County. It should now be obvious to those who have not been supportive in the past, that in order to develop more success stories like this, reliable, affordable access to high-speed internet is absolutely necessary. Think of how many of our young people would stay here if they could ‘telecommute’ rather than be forced to move away in search of employment,” said Gallant.
