MP Cheryl Gallant Calls Throne Speech A Vision For The Future
October 17, 2007
OTTAWA – Cheryl Gallant, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP, says the Oct. 16 Speech from the Throne has drawn a clear picture of Canada’s enviable future under Canada’s Conservative government.

"This is a decisive Throne Speech. This is a no-nonsense Throne Speech. This is a far-sighted Throne Speech. It demands that that the Opposition parties stop playing politics at the expense of the nation’s business,” said Gallant.

Specifically, Gallant is “extremely pleased” that the Throne Speech signals the government’s intention to proceed with a number of criminal justice bills that did not pass during the last session of Parliament because the Opposition stalled, ignored or eroded the legislation. “With an omnibus justice bill, the Opposition will be forced to decide whether they want to protect children from sexual predators and support victims of crime. In addition, we have again committed ourselves to repealing the wasteful long-gun registry."

The Throne Speech states that the government will introduce measures on food and product safety to ensure families have confidence in the quality and safety of what they buy. “This is precisely what was recommended at the roundtable of agriculture representatives that I hosted in Cobden,” said Gallant. “I am so very pleased that these recommendations that I forwarded to the Agriculture Minister were incorporated into the Speech from the Throne.”

The speech outlined five clear priorities:
  • Strengthening Canada’s Sovereignty and Place in the World.
  • Strengthening the Federation and our Democratic Institutions.
  • Providing Effective Economic Leadership.
  • Tackling Crime and Strengthening the Security of Canadians.
  • Improving the Environment and Health of Canadians.
“Whether it is supporting our obligations in Afghanistan, cutting the GST again or getting tough on crime, our government is committed to serving Canadians with meaningful policies and effective legislation,” said Gallant.
