Celebrate our History in the Valley!
August 01, 2008

Come celebrate history in the Ottawa Valley. With anniversary celebrations taking place in Killaloe, Renfrew, Pembroke and the Polish/Kashuby community, there is lots to see and do right here at home!

A Safe Society

Our federal government’s new approach on crime is working. By focusing efforts away from the discredited billion-dollar long gun registry, to actually pursuing real criminals, crime rates are dropping.

As of May 1st, three new laws from the Conservative Government’s Tackling Violent Crime Act went into effect. The age of protection has been officially increased from 14 to 16. Individuals charged with gun crimes will find it much more difficult to get bail. Criminals who are convicted of gun offences will face stiff mandatory minimum sentences that will keep them behind bars and off the streets.

For parents worried about sexual predators and families worried about rising gang and gun violence, this good news is long overdue. For 13 years, the old government took a ‘see-no-evil,’ soft-on-crime approach to justice. They spent months obstructing the Tackling Violent Crime Act, and only backed down when they realized that our Conservative Government was prepared to fight an election over the issue. Even today Dion and his gang have hinted that they will weaken Canada’s crime laws should they fool their way back into power. Their plan to re-visit and re-open the new legal protections that are key to the Tackling Violent Crime Act reminds Canadians that Dion is not a leader and not worth the risk.

Today, in appreciation of real leadership from Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Government, Canadians are seeing safer neighbourhoods and streets.

A Clean Environment

Thanks to strong Conservative leadership, for the first time ever Canada has a real greenhouse gas reduction plan that includes concrete targets for all major industries.

As a result of neglect by the old government, Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions actually rose 32% above promised Kyoto targets. The “green shaft” policy of failed former Environment Minister Dion will tax working Canadians to pay for a so-called environmental program with no targets and no goals. It promises to “shift the green” out of your pocket to someone else’s pocket! Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made it very clear that Canadians should not be forced to compromise their concern for the environment with a plan that would be a new tax everything, from gasoline to groceries. During times of slowing growth, layoffs and rising prices, only by lowering taxes is the economy stimulated to provide new employment opportunities. Raising taxes will kill jobs.
