November 19, 2008

Ottawa, Ontario - Cheryl Gallant, MP, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, is pleased with the direction of the newly re-elected Conservative Government as outlined in the Speech From the Throne.

“As a member of the Government, I am pleased with the input I have had in a number of the announcements made in the speech from the throne in the direction our government intends to take in the next session of Parliament,” said Ms. Gallant. “First and foremost, prudent fiscal management of the Canadian economy; help for families including an improvement through the universal childcare benefits introduced by our government in the last Parliament.”

“On a local note, I am proud of the role I have played on behalf of the more than 2700 employees who work at AECL. That was to reaffirm our government’s commitment to nuclear as part of the energy mix to meet our ambitious goal to achieve a 90% rate of generating clean electricity. This is Canada’s realistic commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020.”

“On behalf of the women and men who serve in Canada’s Armed Forces, it is important for our government to re-state that we continue to provide our military with the best possible equipment. I am proud to be a member of a government that feels the importance of saving lives. We owe to our troops and we owe it to their families,” remarked MP Gallant.

“As a proud Canadian, I applaud Prime Minister Harper that our Government will continue its pursuit of distinctly Canadian policies that will contribute to a better economy. As Canada navigates today’s global fiscal uncertainties, it is of greatest importantance that we keep our sights fixed on responsible fiscal management.

“For our Municipalities and local ratepayers,  our government remains committed to infrastructure renewal announced in our 33 billion Building Canada program.

“We are a rural riding. Our local hunters and farmers will be delighted to hear that our government remains committed to scrapping the long-gun registry. Rising handgun gang violence in major cities will not be solved by criminalizing law-abiding firearms owners, concluded Cheryl Gallant, MP.
